One of the best things about summer is sitting on a terrace, sipping a latte and something you love to go with it. Monkland is home to several good cafés.

My favourite is Pâtisserie de Nancy, a family-owned pâtisserie at the corner of Oxford. Nancy, named for the city in France and not for the owner, has the best almond croissants in town, as far as I’ve tasted. They are melt-in-your-mouth-scrumptious. They also create delectable, unique sandwiches.

There is something homey about ordering at the bar, going to sit

outside, waiting for your order, brought out on a tray, and being told you can pay later.

My favourite open-face sandwich is goat cheese, tomato and basil on a baguette. The servers will go out of their way to make you comfortable, including bringing out a table if all are taken on the terrace.

Coffees are excellent. Other sandwiches include tuna and avocado, ham and cheese, at $5 to $7.25.

Visa is not accepted but debit cards are. Take home dainty little cookies or homemade pies or quiches.

Good value. Fabulous food. Excellent breads and pastry to take home. What more can you ask for in a neighbourhood café?

Pâtisserie de Nancy is closed Mondays and open 7 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Friday and till 5 pm Saturday and Sunday.

I wish they were open on summer evenings.
