St. Patrick Square hosts FUNdraiser

On a windy Wednesday afternoon August 22, residents and staff of St. Patrick Square seniors residence welcomed Côte-St-Luc community members and leaders to their newly revamped putting green.
Raising funds for Generations Foundation – an organization that provides hot lunches in 50 local schools, summer camp, and other services for children – the event pitted St. Patrick Square’s top 10 resident putters against CSL city officials, and members of St. Patrick’s board of directors.
Participating in the putting tournament were CSL mayor Anthony Housefather, CSL city councillor Mike Cohen, and Adrian Bercovici, Founder of Generations Foundation.
Like most events at St. Patrick Square, the fundraiser was a festive affair. The green buzzed with residents cheering on a favorite putter or lining up for the grilled hot dogs served up by resident volunteers. Even the participant putters could be seen slipping off the green for a “tube steak,” as Bercovici called the hot dogs when he finally got to make his way over to the snack table.
But, for all its party-like atmosphere, participants and residents alike were well aware of the significance of the event. The proceeds raised from the sale of raffle tickets and from the sponsorship of putting holes, as well as from the 25 cent “penalty” for each stroke a player went over, would help Generations help kids.
What’s more, the tournament gave CSL community members an opportunity to give support and appreciation to residents and directors of St. Patrick Square. “The city tries its best to support the St. Patrick Square Seniors Recreation Association, ” said Mayor Housefather of his participation in the tournament. “It’s supporting the residents and encouraging one of the most interesting groups in our community – a group of totally autonomous seniors who help one another out.”
And, judging by the $2,601 raised by the event, St. Patrick Square helps others out too.
But for Bercovici, that’s a no brainer. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again,” he declared between putts, “seniors and kids go together.”
