In 1954, a group of young volunteers created Sun Youth and today, volunteers remain the backbone of the organization. The work they accomplish is instrumental to Sun Youth’s ability to assist thousands of Montrealers every year.
Women are a big part of the organization’s volunteer crew, performing a wide variety of tasks from sorting donations and preparing food baskets, coaching and supporting the organization’s sports teams, greeting and serving users of the food bank, to taking care of the organization’s bookstore. To thank them (and their male counterparts) for their contribution to the organization, Sun Youth organized a special party April 25, as part of the National Volunteer Week.
Sun Youth managers dressed as waiters served the volunteers. Marcel Edouard Reny of Rôtisserie St-Hubert at 4462 St. Denis helped make the lunch possible.
After the lunch, the crew watched a video montage prepared by volunteer co-ordinator Dana Foster and won prizes during party games. The managers ran the games as well as the bar.
Some volunteers are present only a few hours a week and some are there full time, but each contribution makes a world of difference to Sun Youth. To volunteer, contact Dana Foster at 514-842-6822 or bvt@sunyouthorg.com.
