Sofabeds and slipcovers help make you the hostess with the mostest

Once we hit cooler weather, we start spending more time inside and noticing our furnishings.

There’s also that niggling thought about the holidays down the line and sleepover guests arriving. So how can we make sure they’re comfortable, and still have a nice piece of furniture to look at and sit on for the rest of the year?

There are options.

Cameo has been making convertible sofas for more than 50 years, so they really know what they are doing. Their construction and mattresses are so much better and more comfortable than anything you will find branded in chain stores.

Ungava is a shop that is known for duvets (which you will need for those guests or yourselves), but you may not know that they also make a quality futon. One of our sons bought one when he was in university many years ago; we still sleep on it and it’s still comfortable.

A request I get often: “Who makes slipcovers these days?” Slipcovers are a great way to redo the look in a room without the cost or permanent change that comes with reupholstering. You can have one look for winter and one for summer. Four Season Slip Cover can handle that for you.

If it’s a sofa bed you want, go to Cameo, a family-owned manufacturer (since 1960), to buy direct for every kind, style and price of sofa (and chair) bed you can imagine.

The couches can be made into singles, junior doubles, doubles or queen-size beds. You choose your own fabric to match your decor and budget, and they will turn it into a well-made piece of furniture as well as a comfortable bed with an extra firm inner spring or memory foam mattress. The mattresses can even be arranged to help you watch TV.

You can order made-to-measure couches, sectionals, chairs and upholstered beds. Beds can be made to fit in any doorway, since they can come apart if needed.

In a building right off the Main, Ungava Factory Outlet sells high-quality duvets at low prices ($49 and up) using only anti-allergy sanitized feathers. They can create made-to-measure sizes (even for cribs), feather beds, can restuff your old duvet and do special constructions like custom sofa seats and window seats.

You can buy silk duvets, duvet covers, buckwheat pillows and wool mattress covers.

Better quality futons (UFO) are made here too, as well as futon covers, bases and bolsters. To finish your decorating, there are Egyptian cotton and bamboo sheets, bamboo towels and a large selection of ready-made curtains ($19.99 and up). 10 Pine W., Suite 112, 514-287-9276.

The name of this company says it all: Four Season Slip Cover. They have done furniture for Debbie Travis’s Facelift TV show and for decorators like Scott Yetman.

You buy fabric from him or elsewhere. This is a shop-at-home service. 450-465-0650.
