NDG Seniors keep on rocking
Friday, September 28, the NDG Senior Citizens’ Council will be holding its 14th annual Rock-A-Thon fundraiser, from 1 to 3 pm. Similar to a walk-a-thon, the event will feature volunteer “Rockers” in rocking chairs to raise money for the Council’s programs for seniors in NDG and Montreal W. The event takes place at the Council ’s new home at 88 Ballantyne N., corner Curzon.
“This has been a very big year for us, given our move just one year ago after being in the same premises for 20 years, ” says Sheri McLeod, the Council’s Executive Director. “But it’s been a positive change. We’ve become more and more comfortable with Montreal West and at this point it really does feel like home. ”
All funds raised at the Rock-A-Thon will support services such as the Council’s Day Away Respite Program, the Community Lunch Program, and Action Transport, which links seniors with volunteer drivers to get to medical appointments. The Stand-Up! Program – helping seniors increase their leg strength and balance and avoid falls – will start again as well.
This year’s Rock-A-Thon line-up promises to be  entertaining. The emcee, Shirleen Hayes, is a singer, vocal coach, band leader and good friend of the Council.
Also on the bill is the ever popular one-man-band Greg Innes and ballroom dancers Cheryl and Alain.
Volunteers are always needed for the Rock-A-Thon. Call Shari Polowin at 514-487-1311.
