NDG community restaurant needs you

by Kris Berey

The community restaurant Chez Mes Amis in the heart of NDG is looking for volunteers with office or business experience willing to make a six month commitment twice a week.

?We are very good at feeding people and finding food for them, ? said Rob Bull, the chairman of the board of directors, ?but not so good at administrating.?

The restaurant, which offers low cost or no cost meals to people who need them, is run mainly by volunteers.

Several seniors now volunteer and their contribution is highly valued. ?This is the sort of restaurant that does things day by day, and we realize that the seniors ? have been extremely helpful. We need more people with their depth and experience,? said Bull.

The restaurant serves between 100-140 meals daily, including breakfast, lunch and supper. Meals are also delivered to people with limited mobility.

?People who come to our restaurant can only afford one meal a day so often they come for supper, the biggest meal. It is our busiest time,? said Bull.

The clientele is a cross-section of NDG residents, including single parent families, multi-ethnic residents, the unemployed, seniors living alone, and children.

There is no ?proof of poverty? at the restaurant. Patrons are asked to contribute whatever they can, whether it?s cash or just helping out.
