Montreal’s Earth Hour falls on March 19

Turn off the lights for one hour Saturday, March 19 at 8:30pm.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet. Started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007, it is organized by the World Wildlife Fund and has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide.

The one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement.

If you would rather be with others while “in the dark”, here are two free events you can join:

Stargazing at Victoria Hall
The City of Westmount invites you to join in a stargazing event on March 19, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Victoria Hall for activities, information exhibits, music, storytelling, guest speakers and stargazing (weather permitting) with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Refreshments available for purchase. Bring your own cup. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. At the Victoria Hall Community Centre and Westmount Park, 4626 Sherbrooke W.

Free Candlelight Concert at Christ Church Cathedral
Five choirs of young singers will present a programme of music on the theme of light and hope. All of the Cathedral’s lights will be extinguished and candles will be lit. Audience members will be transported to a previous age in which the space is illuminated by hundreds of “individual points of light”, March 19 from 8:15pm to 9:30pm Donations welcomed. 635 Ste-Catherine W.
