McGill Chamber Orchestra unveils musical menu for fall

There are blue skies over McGill, one of the many campuses offering courses on a host of topics this fall.

The McGill Chamber Orchestra is offering a wide-ranging and intriguing program in its 2017-18
season, kicking off September 27 with a piece based on the music of The Beatles and ending with the traditional, Mozart’s Requiem.

The season launch September 27 is called Revolution and includes a concerto for violin based on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with fiddler Ashley MacIsaac. It’s back to tradition November 30 and December 1 with Handel’s Messiah featuring renowned counter tenor Daniel Taylor. The annual Christmas celebration December 20 presents operatic tenor Marc Hervieux as lead vocalist.

A concerto showcasing virtuoso musicians is slated for February 13 when pianist Serhy Salov and violinist Kim Bemsor – both competition prize winners – will perform a variety of classical and contemporary works.

On March 23, 24, and in a matinee March 25, singers from the Opera Studio of the Schulich School for Music will perform Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.

In preparation for Easter, the orchestra offers J.S. Bach’s The Passion According to St. John, with five soloists, choirs, and two conductors. Mozart’s popular Don Giovanni is booked for 4 pm, April 15, with singers of the opera studio of the Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, with staging by Oriol Tomas. The closing concert May 23 is dedicated to Armenian music and features soprano Isabel Bayrajdarian.

Subscriptions to the full season offer savings of up to 40 per cent on the single ticket price. VIP subscriptions are available, offering the best seats, valet parking, opportunities to meet the artists after the performances, discounts on additional tickets, and complementary drinks at some concerts.
