Here at Sun Youth: Motivated to better young lives

Righting social inequities motivated a group of youngsters to establish Sun Youth in 1954.

They started the handwritten Clark Street Sun newspaper to raise funds so disadvantaged children could have access to organized sports and recreational activities. Concerned that children were not getting proper nutrition, they organized social gatherings. The price of admission was canned goods to help poor families.

Sixty years later, Sun Youth provides sports and recreational activities to children and helps 2,300 families each month.

Youth protection is a main concern for Sun Youth. Since 1998, les Centres jeunesse de Montréal, Batshaw Youth and Family Centres, and later on Sainte-Justine Hospital and the Montreal Children’s Hospital have been referring families to Sun Youth.

For 13 years, Sun Youth’s Bullying Prevention and Conflict Resolution Program has been providing “social mentors”, to work with Montreal public school staff. The program helps students fight taxing and bullying by strengthening social ties and team spirit.

May 15 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, Sun Youth will host its annual Pasta Dinner Fundraiser to support its school program. Dinner is $10 for adults, $6 for children aged four to 11, and free for kids under four. Enjoy pasta, salad, bread, drinks and dessert, plus tickets for raffle prizes.

Info and tickets: police@sunyouthorg.com or 514-842-6822, X 249. Event is at 4251 St. Urbain. Don’t miss the chance to make a difference in children’s lives.
