6th annual Hanukah benefit for refugees
On the first night of Hanukah, Saturday, December 16, the House of Friendship will host a Hanukah Party to raise funds to help refugees.
As in past years, the popular event will begin with a walking tour of the Old Jewish Quarter led by film maker, Stan Asher, between 5 and 6 pm.
From 6 to 7 pm, participants will be treated to hot latkes (potato pancakes) made by House of Friendship volunteers. At 7:15 pm, there will be a Secular Humanist Hanukah candle-lighting, written by Rabbi Ben Biber of Washington in English, and translated into Yiddish by Max Goldman, and into French by Myriam Block. After the candle-lighting, the entertainment begins with Bronna Levy singing in Yiddish followed by a dance party with the Bagg Street Klezmer Band, led by Rick Goldman, who, in the day time, works as a lawyer with The Committee to Aid Refugees.
His band will perform traditional Klezmer and Hanukah songs.
Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children.
All proceeds go to the House of Friendship’s refugee support work in Montreal. Site of the former Peretz School, the House of Friendship provides language courses, counselling, and training for refugees. The center is at 120 Duluth East, corner Coloniale.
The event is open to all. Info: (514) 843-4356.
