Dialogue with Atikamekw artist
Native art and spirituality go hand in hand, and this is evident in the paintings of Eruoma Awashish, whose work is on display at The Guild, 1460-B Sherbrooke W. It’s titled Lightning in My Heart.
Awashish is Atikamekw by her father and Québécoise by her mother, and in her work speaks of hybridization and metamorphosis.
A graduate of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, she personifies dialogue and in her paintings the viewer is offered spirituality, symbolism, and syncretism. To help appreciate her work, Prof. Norman Cornett, a former McGill religion teacher, has organized two dialogic workshops: Saturday, May 13, from noon to 2 pm, he will focus on the paintings; Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 4 pm, he will animate a dialogue with the artist.
Tickets cost $5, but it’s free for Guild members.
