Do you have a clue?
T
hrough the Sun Youth organization, a Montreal businessman has posted a $3,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who recently vandalized the Les Jeunes Musulmans Canadiens school in St. Laurent.
“The donor is not part of the Muslim community but a Jewish businessman,” said Sid Stephens, Sun Youth's Executive V.P.  “He says this is not a Jewish problem, not a Muslim problem, but a  society problem. He's against this type of attack on a learning institution that is supposed to be a safe haven for children.”
When an Orthodox Jewish boys' school got firebombed last year, it was a French-Canadian businessman who posted a reward, Stevens said. “He felt it so important that the greater community stand up and be counted.”
Do rewards work? “Yes, they certainly do,” Stevens said. Since 1991, Sun Youth has paid out more than $50,000 to individuals who were instrumental in solving 15 crimes, including  homicides,  sexual assaults,  attempted murders and  purse-snatchings, one involving a 91-year-old woman in the metro. Days after a recent hit and run that killed a 65-year old nurse, another nurse posted a reward. Due to the publicity, an experienced tow-truck driver spotted the car, recognizing the type of damage a vehicle would sustain in this type of accident. He called in and the driver was found. “It's important to know that this is not our money,” Stevens says. “This is money given to us by people who want to remain anonymous. There are nice people out there.”
