Barbara Lewis sings the soul of the country

The growing repertoire of great songs written by Canadians is a perfect focus for a concert series, and that is exactly what Barbara Lewis is doing.

With her four-octave range, Lewis has prepared a program entitled My Canada: Singing the Soul of A Country and will be performing music from the Canadian Songbook on Saturday, October 22, at St. Columba by The Lake Presbyterian Church, 11 Rodney Ave. in Pointe Claire.

The show is part of the annual concert series at the church. Proceeds of the suggested $15 donation will be given to Montreal Youth Unlimited for a meals and after-school program it offers to underprivileged elementary-school students in Pierrefonds

Her setlist includes tunes by Leonard Cohen (“Hallelujah”), Joni Mitchell (“Both Sides Now”), Claude Dubois, Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, Stompin’ Tom Connors, and others who exemplify our country.

Lewis plans to take the show on the road, with pianist/arranger Doug Balfour and bassist Sage Reynolds.

“I love Canada, it’s my anchor and a part of my soul,” she says, adding she is getting an early start on next year’s planned celebration of the country’s 150th anniversary.
